Why re.p.ly?

reply definition from Wikipedia

A re·ply is a statement or acknowledgment made in response to an interrogative question, request or comment.

Replies are communicated in a variety of ways, the most common being spoken or written, and act as a way of conveying relevant information and continuing a conversational exchange. A simple reply can take the form of a single word, for example "yes" or "no", or can be expressed via body language, such as nodding the head or winking.

Using the URL Shortener
Simply copy/paste the URL you'd like to shrink into the text box on the main page. Push the "shorten" button and re.p.ly will make the link smaller for you and give you a new shortened link. You can then copy this new URL wherever you'd like to use it. Although the site is accesible only for normal use at re.p.ly, all the links are shortened at p.ly only. So if you have a link that looks like this:

http://www.soft32.com/s/Windows/Internet/News_and_Blogs_and_RSS_Tools/3-48-0-0.html

your shortened URL will look like this (notice only the p.ly domain used):

http://pl.ly/Tysb54

How to use the shortened link
There is no need to visit re.pl.y or p.ly to use a shortened address. Simply type or paste the shortened URL into your browser's address bar and press enter, you will be automatically forwarded to the original address. If somebody has given you a p.ly URL in the form of a hyperlink, just click on the link. If a link has been protected with a password, before redirecting you to the long URL you will reach our site and you will be asked to enter the password.

How to preview a shortened address by re.p.ly
It's very easy to find out where any p.ly shortened link will take you without having to visit it. This is useful to check that the link will redirect to a destination you trust. Simply add a hyphen (dash) to the end of the shortened URL, and instead of being redirected to the original long address automatically, you'll be taken to a preview page telling you where the link goes.

For example: You have been given the shortened link http://p.ly/dhd63 and want to check where it goes. Copy/paste it into your browser's address bar and then add a hyphen, making the link http://p.ly/dhd63 -. Now simply visit that address, and instead of being taken directly to the original URL, you'll be taken to a preview page on our site which will tell you the link's destination.

You can also set a cookie on your machine so that you always preview p.ly URLs before visiting them. Sign up or sign in to you account and on the settings page: "Enable automatic previews" or "Disable automatic previews"

How long does a p.ly URL last for?

If you create a p.ly URL within your re.p.ly account, we will never delete it, whether it has ever been visited or not.

Does re.p.ly ever re-use links?
No. Each link re.p.ly issues is unique and will not be re-used, so you can be confident users will arrive at the correct site. Some URL shorteners issue links a character shorter than re.p.ly, but have to re-use them because there is an upper limit to the number of character combinations.

Every p.ly link has an more info page that shows the number of clicks and other relevant data.

If someone else shortens the same URL as me, do we both see the same number of clicks?
p.ly tracks the total number of clicks pointing to a single long link. Signed in re.p.ly users receive a unique p.ly link that lets them track clicks and other data separately, while still seeing totals for all p.ly links pointing to the same long link. Users not signed in all share the same p.ly link.
